THE UNITED States-Egypt Friendship Society (USEF) hosted a farewell luncheon on July 17 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Georgetown for Ambassador Nabil Fahmy. A career diplomat, Fahmy served nine years as Egypt’s ambassador in Washington, DC. He is the reason U.S. relations are strong with Egypt, Ambassador Edward “Ned” Walker, who served as U.S. ambassador in Egypt, Israel and the UAE, said in remarks on behalf of USEF. “Ambassador Fahmy can help smooth over almost everything.” Fahmy crossed the country a hundred times and worked tirelessly to try to bring peace to the Middle East.

There were four American ambassadors to Cairo during Fahmy’s tenure in Washington, and many of them came to the luncheon to say goodbye. Ambassador Fahmy said there were highs and lows, peaks and valleys, and differences in strategies over the years. USEF and other American friends helped nurture the special U.S./Egypt relationship, Fahmy said. He asked USEF to provide the same support to Egypt’s new Ambassador Sameh Shoukry (previously Egypt’s ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva) and his wife, Susie.
