DEAR SENATOR or REPRESENTATIVE:
I’d like to relay a message from Rachel Corrie, an American peace activist who was recently killed by an Israeli bulldozer. Two and a half weeks before her death, she wrote this prescient e-mail to her mother:
“Coming here is one of the better things I’ve ever done. So when I sound crazy or if the Israeli military should break with their racist tendency not to injure white people, please pin the reason squarely on the fact that I am in the midst of a genocide which I am indirectly supporting, and for which my government is largely responsible.”
Our government is responsible for the heartache in Palestine. We have blocked U.N. requests for an international protection force in the occupied territories. If peacekeepers had been in Gaza and the West Bank, they could have prevented Israel’s brutal actions against Palestinian civilians, as well as Rachel’s death. And now, only days after the inexcusable murder of an American by an Israeli soldier, President Bush has asked Congress for extra aid for Israel to help it carry out its illegal occupation. Please send no more of my tax dollars to Israel.
